There’s clearly a lot of love and care put into this game, and although some of that should’ve been spent to fix its glaring performance issues, it still holds up as a fun adventure. From overall balance to questionable design choices, Sonic Frontiers might not be as sophisticated or polished as the very best games out there. However, when it comes to discovery and sense of wonder, Sonic Frontier’s Open Zone design can proudly stand side by side with any open world masterpiece. While admittedly many of its activities are simple, the amount of content it offers is staggering. The Open Zones and their epic boss battles make great use of Sonic’s speed, creating an experience that still feels authentic to the character. While far from perfect, there hasn’t been a Sonic title that feels this relevant in a long time.

Heck, even Knuckles’ treasure-hunting escapades are kind of entertaining. Gamma’s linear, third-person shooter segments are inoffensive, though not terribly engaging. Given Sonic the Hedgehog’s extensive library, how is one supposed to sift through the riffraff and deduce which games are the best and worst in the series since its 1991 debut? Sonic 3D Blast is the last Sonic game on the Genesis and the first isometric “3D” Sonic. It breaks with the series’ traditional “go fast, reach the end” formula in favor of a fetch-quest-like system that has Sonic collecting five Flickies before he can move on. He’s slow, sliding over all the odd, sloped geometry of the levels. Tying progression to a collection goal makes levels tedious and the isometric view discourages a lot of the exploration present in earlier games.
Sonic The Hedgehog’s road to the big screen
The Sonic series continued to see new releases almost every year, and not to say they didn’t learn from their mistakes but it’s clear post-Sonic 06, Sonic was still struggling to find his footing. This is shown in Sonic’s very next game, developed alongside Sonic 06, Sonic and the Secret Rings, which was released in 2007 on the Wii. Sonic and the Secret Rings put Sonic in an almost temple-run feeling environment where the player controls Sonic from behind while he endlessly runs forward. But all was not lost for Sonic fans, for in between these games, Sega released the title Sonic Unleashed for the Playstation 2, Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and the Wii in 2008.

It also marks super sonic games for free the beginning of Sonic’s slow decline into irrelevance within his own franchise. The introduction of the franchise’s third playable character, Knuckles the Echidna, made speed obsolete. Knuckles reappears in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 as a playable character. Like many other Mario and Sonic characters in the game, Knuckles wears outfits that are event-appropriate. Knuckles returns as a Power-type character in the Wii version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, where he appears in the opening with all of the other athletes and competing in Canoe Sprint 1000m and Football. A Mii outfit based on Knuckles can be unlocked, and he also appears as a character that can be spoken to in London Party mode in order to play minigames and earn stickers.
